ADULT CLASSES:

As shown below, the Federation of Italian American Organizations’ Italian Language courses are offered for proficiency levels from Beginner to Advanced/Conversation.

When you register, please include your preference of courses (1st and 2nd choice). Whether a particular class is offered will depend upon the number of students requesting that particular class.  If a sufficient number of students do not enroll, then the class will not be offered. Although we will try to accommodate your selection, classes will be structured to yield a reasonable number of students per class.

Note: All classes in the program will follow the Harris Stowe University schedule for holidays, snow days, etc. as announced by Harris Stowe University. Please check the radio for announcement of closure if there is inclement weather.



Tuition for the Spring 2012 semester will be $30/person (not including books).

All books can be purchased at www.applauselearning.com All classes will be held from 7 pm – 9 pm at Harris Stowe State University School of Business South Campus.

To the greatest degree possible, only Italian is used in classes. Sometime, in order to lower anxiety, establish routine, or give direction, English may be used. Students start speaking in Italian the very first day and build their skills with every lesson.

Beginners -- Thursdays
This course introduces the fundamental elements of the Italian language within a cultural context. Students will learn correct pronunciation of Italian sounds, basic listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, reading, reading comprehension. There will be speaking exercises and writing of simple sentences and  short paragraphs are introduced in this course. Grammar coverage includes:  present tense of regular and some irregular verbs, nouns and articles / singular and plural, indirect pronouns, prepositions and numbers.  Communication goals include: greet and introduce oneself, express likes and dislikes, ask and tell time and date, ask and answer questions regarding food/ drinks and at the restaurant.

Intermediate -- Tuesdays
Vocabulary will be expanded; verbs and adverbs will be added to already simple concepts learned. Verb tenses will be explained and practiced. More verb forms are introduced.

Advanced/Conversation – Tuesday
This is the most flexible level. The text is reviewed thoroughly, and conversational involvement is stressed. The instructor will be guided by the text, but will also use judgment to enhance the degree of difficulty of items studied. Non-text materials are commonly used.

Special Topics/Conversation – Wednesday
This course is for students who have completed the Advanced/Conversational Italian course. This class will meet to read and discuss topics agreed upon by the students and the instructor.
